This fall, I had the privilege of doing the design for the Hillsdale College literary magazine The Tower Light. I did the design last fall as well, and I loved being able to work on such a typography-focused work with a lot of artistic freedom.
Last year, the editor wanted something a very simple, transparent design with a classic feel. This year, the editor wanted something inspired by 1960’s and ’70s paperbacks. I tried to find a color scheme hinting at those eras–avocado, mauve, and tangerine–but with enough refinement to be perfectly modern and tasteful. The cover design was inspired by a combination of the publication title and the style of drawing used on the covers of several old paperbacks I had lying around my house.
